Welcome to Wyrmscale

Your GM team aim to bring you a LARP set in a fantasy world of myth and magic, during an age of burgeoning exploration, innovation and of course, piracy on the high seas. We are drawing inspiration from a range of real world myths and legends as well as the Golden Age of Piracy. The style of play will be familiar, but will also feature some new ideas to create a self-directed sandbox game experience. We want to encourage player agency, and hope that together we can create a space where players have the opportunity and means to take the wheel of their own stories as we all weave this epic adventure together.

Player vs. Player

Friendly rivalries and working at cross purposes is ok, and expected, but this does not mean that we are running a LARP that encourages direct PVP (player vs. player) actions. Players will not have the mechanical means to wantonly steal from or murder other player characters, and must opt in if they want to include this content. The player characters are all loyal to Anderlynd and are working together for a relatively common goal. We'd love for you to have fun in this game together, confident that your GM team and fabulous crew will provide enough baddies to keep you entertained.

The Living World

You will not be left completely to your own devices. The world around you will be filled with NPCs and populated with quests, expeditions and monsters to engage with, but life in this world will move forward whether the characters are ready or not. There will be a litany of content available to unravel - juicy gossip, expansive lore, court intrigue, and much more. Remember that a plot shared is a plot doubled. The best secrets are the ones that you tell your 6–7 closest friends. There will be plenty to do and we encourage collaboration between participants to ensure everyone has the best game possible.

Combat & Accessibility

Wyrmscale will feature boffer combat using larp safe foam weapons and approved projectile weapons including spell packets and band guns with gunpowder popcaps. We will do our best to ensure that our content is inclusive and accessible to a range of physical abilities. Involvement in scenarios will always be optional. Some will feature themes of exploration, hardship and conflict that may push the physical ability of participants, and there is the potential to be caught in live combat scenarios during gameplay.

We want content to be safe and fun for all involved and there will always be the option to opt out of scenes you are not comfortable with. Sometimes personal content preferences, physical ability or simply just having a full schedule will mean you will miss out on stuff, and that's ok!

Sensitive Themes

Although history has inspired this setting, we recognise the real-world hardships that were suffered. In no way do we plan to glorify slavery, human trafficking, and conquest over indigenous people. Such themes may be referenced in the setting, but they are the domain of villainous characters. Other unsavory topics such as racism, classism, religious intolerance, and other discrimination may pop up in in-game content, but we will not tolerate out of character discrimination, bullying or harassment of any kind.

Right of Refusal

We strive to be inclusive, however, want to stress that no one has an automatic right to attend these events or have access to our online platforms. We the GMs reserve the right to refuse your participation in this event for any reason, including but not limited to:

  • Any reference to queerphobia, transphobia, and sexual violence, in character or out of character, including in your character's backstory.
  • Behaviour at other events (including online) that contravenes the NZLARPS Code of Conduct, and/or causes other participants unease, discomfort or alarm.
  • Behaviour at other events (including online) that leads us to believe that you will not behave in line with our community and artistic values, including negative game play style, bullying or trolling, unsafe combat or role playing practices, or any other behaviour we deem detrimental to the project.
  • Discriminatory behaviour (including online).
  • Bringing the game or larp community into disrepute.
  • Contacting, DMing and/or otherwise harassing other participants when they do not want you to.
  • Annoying the GMs, or other participants so much that we don't want to spend any more time on you. If you actively make this not fun, we will not want you there.

Our Promise

This is a volunteer, community effort and we are all here to have fun. Our goal is to provide a top notch live action roleplay experience for all involved. We look forward to working with all those who want to get on board and create a grand narrative in our shared storytelling adventure together. We will begin our tale in Auckland, November 2026 with a prologue game, and depending on how the story unfolds, follow with around 5 weekend chapters and several day events over the following 3 years.
